exercise: verify a single story through different methods

it's especially important to verify a story through open sources and using various verification methods when you have very little information about its media source and there is a possibility you are dealing with a hidden web page.

exercise 1.1. selection of topic for a news story

the aim of the exercise is to help participants understand criteria for identifying newsworthiness of a story. the exercise consists of three stages: the first stage involves the selection of topic based on personal experience, the second stage envisages the same but based on the experience of other people, and the third stage involves discussion.

exercise 1.2. inverted pyramid

the aim of exercise is to help participants develop skills of structured news writing.

exercise 1.3. agenda setting

the process of editorial decision-making implies the selection of important information, during which media, apart from informing society about current events filters out certain information too. various factors may impact the agenda setting by media. the aim of the exercise is to help the participants develop decision making skills as well as skills of critical analysis of those factors which may affect agenda setting.
